Borneo is the world’s third-largest island and is shared by Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
Indonesia administers the island’s southern and central regions, known collectively as Kalimantan. Malaysia occupies the northern states of Sabah and Sarawak, while the independent nation of Brunei lies on Borneo’s north coast. This makes Borneo one of the few islands divided among three countries.
Borneo is renowned for rainforests, orangutans, proboscis monkeys, and exceptional biodiversity. It is also frequently confused with the Indonesian name Kalimantan, but Kalimantan refers only to the Indonesian portion of the island, not to Borneo as a whole. The island’s highest mountain is Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia.
