Which island is the world's second-largest, after Greenland?
Answer
New Guinea
Answer
New Guinea
New Guinea is the world's second-largest island, after Greenland.
New Guinea covers about 785,000 square kilometres and lies north of Australia. Its western half is administered by Indonesia as the provinces of Papua and West Papua, while the eastern half is the independent country of Papua New Guinea.
The island is dominated by rugged mountains, including Puncak Jaya, which rises to 4,884 metres and is the highest mountain between the Himalayas and the Andes. New Guinea also has extensive rainforests and extraordinary biological diversity, including many birds-of-paradise.
New Guinea is sometimes mistaken for Papua New Guinea, but the latter is only the island's eastern country. The island itself also includes numerous offshore islands and supports hundreds of distinct languages and cultures.
