Which island is the world’s largest island located entirely in a freshwater lake?
Answer
Manitoulin Island
Answer
Manitoulin Island
Manitoulin Island is the world’s largest island located entirely in a freshwater lake.
Manitoulin lies in Lake Huron, one of North America’s Great Lakes, and covers about 2,766 square kilometres. It is part of Ontario, Canada, and is connected to the mainland by the Little Current Swing Bridge. The island has many smaller lakes, some of which contain islands of their own.
The name Manitoulin comes from an Anishinaabe term associated with the spirit world. The island remains home to several First Nations communities, including the six communities of the Wikwemikong Unceded Territory.
Its status is sometimes confused with the world’s largest lake island of any type, which is different because that category can include islands in saltwater or other bodies. Manitoulin’s distinction specifically depends on being entirely surrounded by freshwater.
