Which island is the main island of the Faroe Islands and contains the capital, Tórshavn?

The story behind the answer

Streymoy is the main island of the Faroe Islands and contains the capital, Tórshavn.

The Faroe Islands are a self-governing archipelago within the Kingdom of Denmark, located in the North Atlantic between Iceland, Norway, and Scotland. Streymoy is the largest and most populous island in the group.

Tórshavn stands on Streymoy’s southeastern coast. Its name means Thor’s harbor, and the settlement has long served as the political and commercial center of the Faroes. The historic Tinganes district contains red wooden buildings associated with the islands’ government.

Streymoy is connected to neighboring Eysturoy by bridges and subsea infrastructure. Vágar, another important Faroese island, contains the archipelago’s main airport, but not its capital. The islands’ steep terrain and narrow fjords are characteristic of volcanic North Atlantic landscapes.
