Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and contains Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak.
The island is part of Spain’s Canary Islands archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Morocco. Mount Teide is a volcanic mountain inside Teide National Park and rises to 3,715 metres above sea level.
Tenerife formed through volcanic activity and has contrasting landscapes, from dry southern slopes to greener northern areas. Its two main urban centres are Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Tenerife is sometimes confused with Gran Canaria, another major Canary Island. Gran Canaria is known for Las Palmas and a mountainous interior, but Mount Teide is on Tenerife.
