Honshu is the largest of Japan’s four main islands.
Honshu stretches from the Tsugaru Strait in the north to the Kii Peninsula and Inland Sea region in the south. It covers about 228,000 square kilometres and contains most of Japan’s population, industry, and major cities.
Tokyo, Japan’s capital, lies on Honshu’s Pacific coast, as do Yokohama, Osaka, Kyoto, and Hiroshima. Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain, is also located on Honshu near the boundary between Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures.
The other three principal islands are Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku. Japan also includes thousands of smaller islands, including Okinawa and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
