Which island is the largest island in Lake Superior?

The story behind the answer

Isle Royale is the largest island in Lake Superior.

The island lies in the northwestern part of Lake Superior, close to the Canadian–United States maritime boundary. It belongs to the United States and is protected as Isle Royale National Park, a remote wilderness area in Michigan.

Isle Royale is about 72 kilometres long and is famous for its forests, inland lakes, rocky shoreline, and moose–gray wolf ecosystem. Scientists have studied the relationship between those two species there for decades, making the island an important natural laboratory.

Although Isle Royale is the largest island in Lake Superior, it is not the largest freshwater island in the world. That distinction is generally given to Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron. The two islands are therefore easy to mix up when comparing Great Lakes geography.
