Which island is home to the ancient city of Knossos?

The story behind the answer

Crete is the Greek island home to the ancient city and archaeological site of Knossos.

Crete is Greece's largest island and the fifth-largest island in the Mediterranean. It lies south of the Aegean Sea and has a long, mountainous shape extending across the eastern Mediterranean.

Knossos was a major centre of the Minoan civilisation, which flourished on Crete during the Bronze Age. Archaeologists associate the palace complex with an urban settlement that developed over many centuries. Excavations at the site revealed elaborate architecture, frescoes, storage rooms, and evidence of complex administration.

The name Knossos is often linked in popular culture to the story of King Minos and the Labyrinth, but the mythological tradition and archaeological evidence are not identical. Crete also has important sites at Phaistos, Malia, and Zakros, showing that Minoan culture extended beyond Knossos.
