Which island is divided among Haiti and the Dominican Republic?

The story behind the answer

Hispaniola is the Caribbean island divided between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Haiti occupies the western portion of the island, while the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern portion. The two countries share a land border running across Hispaniola, which lies between Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Christopher Columbus reached the island in 1492 and established La Navidad, one of the earliest European settlements in the Americas. Spain later called the eastern colony Santo Domingo, while France gained control of the western part, which became Haiti after its 1804 independence.

Hispaniola is the second-largest island in the Caribbean, after Cuba. Its terrain includes mountain ranges, valleys, forests, and coastal plains, with Pico Duarte as its highest point.
