Which island is Canada’s northernmost large island and contains Quttinirpaaq National Park?

The story behind the answer

Ellesmere Island is Canada’s northernmost large island and contains Quttinirpaaq National Park.

It is part of Nunavut’s Qikiqtaalik Region in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The island lies close to Greenland, separated from it by the Nares Strait and nearby channels. Much of Ellesmere Island is mountainous, glaciated, and within the High Arctic.

Quttinirpaaq National Park occupies the island’s northern section and is Canada’s second-largest national park. Its name means “top of the world” in Inuktitut. The park contains polar desert, glaciers, fjords, and wildlife such as muskoxen and Arctic hares.

Ellesmere Island is not the same as Baffin Island, Canada’s largest island. Nor is it synonymous with Axel Heiberg Island, which lies immediately west and is known for its fossil forests.
