Which island country was the native home of the extinct dodo?

The story behind the answer

Mauritius was the native home of the extinct dodo.

The dodo was a flightless bird endemic to Mauritius, an island in the southwestern Indian Ocean. Dutch sailors recorded the bird in the late 16th century, and it disappeared by the late 17th century. Introduced animals, habitat changes, and human hunting all contributed to its extinction.

Mauritius is the largest island in the Mascarene archipelago and is volcanic in origin. Its highest point is Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, which reaches 828 metres. The island became independent from the United Kingdom in 1968.

The dodo was not native to nearby Réunion or Rodrigues, although all three islands belong to the Mascarene region. Mauritius is also distinct from the Republic of Mauritius as a whole: the country includes several outer islands and islets in addition to the main island.
