Which island contains Suva, Fiji's capital?

The story behind the answer

Suva, Fiji’s capital, is located on the island of Viti Levu.

Suva sits on Viti Levu’s southeastern coast, around Suva Harbour and a hilly peninsula between Laucala Bay and the harbor. Viti Levu is Fiji’s largest island and contains most of the country’s population, making it the natural political and economic center of the archipelago.

Fiji’s capital was moved to Suva from Levuka in 1877. Levuka, on the smaller island of Ovalau, had limited room for expansion because it was squeezed between steep mountains and the sea. The colonial administration formally transferred its operations to Suva in 1882. Suva later developed into Fiji’s major port and a regional hub for Pacific institutions, businesses, and diplomatic missions.

A common mix-up is Vanua Levu, Fiji’s second-largest island. It is important geographically and culturally, but it does not contain the national capital. Viti Levu is also home to Mount Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest peak, and to major cities including Nadi, Lautoka, and Nausori.
