Which island contains most of Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta?

The story behind the answer

Java is the island containing most of Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta.

Java lies between Sumatra and Bali and is Indonesia’s most populous island. Jakarta occupies Java’s northwestern coast, although the national government has been developing Nusantara on the island of Borneo as a future capital.

Java covers roughly 129,000 square kilometres but is home to more than half of Indonesia’s population. Its fertile volcanic soils, extensive rice cultivation, and major cities have supported dense settlement for centuries.

Java contains Indonesia’s political and economic centre as well as important historical sites, including Borobudur and Prambanan. Jakarta’s metropolitan region also extends into the neighbouring provinces of Banten and West Java.
