Which island contains Manila, the capital of the Philippines?

The story behind the answer

Luzon is the Philippine island that contains Manila, the country’s capital.

Located in the northern Philippines, Luzon is the country’s largest and most populous island. Manila stands on its western side, on the eastern shore of Manila Bay, and forms part of the larger Metro Manila urban area. The island is also the political, economic, and historical centre of the Philippines.

Luzon includes major landscapes such as the Cordillera Central and the volcanic peaks of Mount Pinatubo and Mayon nearby in the wider Luzon region. Mindanao is the other major large island, but it lies farther south and does not contain the national capital. Cebu and Palawan are important islands but are considerably smaller.
