Which is the longest track on Metallica's 1991 album Metallica?

The story behind the answer

“My Friend of Misery” is the longest track on Metallica’s 1991 album Metallica, running 6 minutes and 49 seconds.

The song appears as track 11, immediately before “The Struggle Within.” Its length is slightly greater than “Wherever I May Roam,” which runs 6:44, and longer than “Nothing Else Matters,” which runs 6:28.

Jason Newsted wrote the song’s main riff and originally imagined it as an instrumental. The final version became a vocal song with music credited to Newsted, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich. Its arrangement gives the bass-led idea a full band setting while retaining a brooding, reflective mood.

The track is also notable because it emerged from a songwriting tradition in which Metallica had included an instrumental on each previous album. Instead of continuing that pattern, the band turned Newsted’s instrumental concept into one of the Black Album’s more expansive songs.
