Emersonn scored Ipswich Town’s opening goal against Sunderland during the 2026–27 Premier League opening weekend.
The goal came after Ipswich summer signings Julio Enciso and Emersonn combined at Portman Road. It gave Ipswich an early advantage in a match between two clubs with strong recent promotion stories.
Sunderland equalised through Nilson Angulo, whose direct free-kick had additional historical significance: it made him the first player since Marcos Alonso for Chelsea in 2021–22 to score his club’s first goal of a Premier League season directly from a free-kick.
Ipswich eventually won 2–1 when substitute Jack Clarke scored in the 90th minute against his former club. That victory was Ipswich’s first Matchweek 1 top-flight win since the 1993–94 season. The main distinction to remember is that Emersonn scored Ipswich’s first goal, while Clarke scored the late winner.
