Emersonn scored Ipswich Town’s opening goal against Sunderland in 2026–27 Matchweek 1.
The goal came from a combination between Ipswich’s summer signings: Julio Enciso supplied the assist and Emersonn finished the move. It gave Ipswich an early advantage in a match that ended with a 2–1 victory at Portman Road.
Sunderland equalised through Ecuadorian forward Nilson Angulo, who scored directly from a free-kick. That goal carried a historical footnote because Angulo became the first player since Marcos Alonso in 2021–22 to score his club’s first goal of a Premier League season from a direct free-kick.
Ipswich ultimately secured the points when substitute Jack Clarke scored in the 90th minute against his former club. The victory was Ipswich’s first opening Matchweek 1 win in the top flight since the 1993–94 season.
The result gave Ipswich an especially memorable return to Premier League football. It also meant that two promoted teams, Ipswich and Hull City, won their opening matches for the second successive season.
