Which Ipswich Town player opened the scoring against Sunderland in the 2026–27 Premier League opener?

The story behind the answer

Emersonn opened the scoring for Ipswich Town against Sunderland in the 2026–27 Premier League opener.

The goal came at Portman Road during Ipswich’s first Premier League match of the season. Emersonn combined with fellow summer signing Julio Enciso to give Ipswich the lead in Gary O’Neil’s first competitive match in charge of the club.

Sunderland equalised through Nilson Angulo, whose direct free-kick made him the first player to score his side’s opening goal of a Premier League season in that manner since Marcos Alonso did so for Chelsea in 2021–22. Ipswich nevertheless claimed victory when substitute Jack Clarke scored in the 90th minute.

Clarke’s winner was particularly memorable because he had previously played for Sunderland. The 2–1 result gave Ipswich their first Matchweek 1 top-flight victory since the 1993–94 season.
