Which IPL team won the league's first title in 2008?

The story behind the answer

Rajasthan Royals won the Indian Premier League’s first title in 2008.

The inaugural IPL final was played on 1 June 2008 at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings by three wickets, reaching 164 for 7 from the final ball after Chennai had made 163 for 5. Sohail Tanvir and Shane Warne completed the chase with the last run, while Yusuf Pathan was named player of the match for his 56 and three wickets.

The Royals were captained by Shane Warne and had topped the league stage with 11 wins from 14 matches. Their victory was notable because the franchise was widely viewed as an underdog compared with more expensively assembled teams. Chennai, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, finished as runners-up.

The result is sometimes confused with later IPL milestones, such as the first team to win consecutive titles or the first team to win multiple championships. Those are separate records; Rajasthan Royals were specifically the champions of the inaugural 2008 season.
