Which Icelandic peninsula contains the Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano and glacier?

The story behind the answer

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula contains the Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano and glacier in western Iceland.

Snæfellsnes extends westward from Iceland and is often called “Iceland in miniature” because it brings together many landscapes found across the country. Its scenery includes lava fields, black-sand beaches, cliffs, fishing villages, waterfalls and mountains.

Snæfellsjökull rises at the peninsula’s western tip and reaches about 1,446 metres. The volcano is capped by a glacier and is the central landmark of Snæfellsjökull National Park, established in 2001. The park protects volcanic landscapes and a diverse coastline.

The mountain also has literary fame: Jules Verne used it as the entrance to the subterranean journey in his 1864 novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth. It is distinct from the Reykjanes Peninsula near Reykjavík and the mountainous Westfjords region farther north.
