Which hyena is voiced by Jim Cummings?

The story behind the answer

Jim Cummings voices Ed, the dim-witted hyena in The Lion King.

Ed is the largely nonverbal member of Scar’s hyena trio. Instead of speaking conventional dialogue, he communicates through exaggerated laughter, which gives the character much of his comic identity. The trio also includes Shenzi, voiced by Whoopi Goldberg, and Banzai, voiced by Cheech Marin.

Cummings had more than one role in the 1994 film. Besides voicing Ed, he supplied the voice of a mole who speaks with Zazu and partially performed Scar’s singing in “Be Prepared.” That overlap can create confusion, especially because Jeremy Irons provides Scar’s principal speaking voice.

Ed is not the same character as Scar, and Jim Cummings is not Scar’s regular dialogue actor. The hyenas serve as Scar’s allies in his plan to seize the Pride Lands, but their comic behavior contrasts with the film’s darker betrayal and power struggle. The original animated movie was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.
