Which hyena is voiced by Cheech Marin?

The story behind the answer

Cheech Marin voices Banzai in The Lion King.

Banzai is one of Scar’s three spotted-hyena allies, alongside Shenzi and Ed. He is portrayed as aggressive, impulsive, and frequently sarcastic, making him one of the film’s comic villains.

Marin was originally intended to reunite with his comedy partner Tommy Chong for the hyena roles, but Chong was unavailable. Marin ultimately joined Whoopi Goldberg and Jim Cummings in the hyena trio. Goldberg voices Shenzi, while Cummings voices Ed.

A common mix-up is confusing the actors with the characters’ personalities or with Scar’s vocal performance. Jim Cummings also partially supplied Scar’s singing voice in “Be Prepared,” but he does not voice Scar in the film’s dialogue. Marin also contributes supporting vocals to that song as Banzai. The 1994 animated film was released by Walt Disney Pictures and directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff.
