J.K. Rowling received an OBE in 2001.
The honor was presented after the early Harry Potter books had become a major publishing success. OBE stands for Officer of the Order of the British Empire, one grade within the United Kingdom’s honors system.
Rowling’s award recognized her contribution to children’s literature. It was not a knighthood or damehood, and the letters OBE are placed after a recipient’s name in formal usage.
She received other honors during her career, including the Hans Christian Andersen Award for Literature in 2010. These different awards are sometimes blended together, but the 2001 honor was specifically an OBE.
