What was J.K. Rowling’s first published novel called in its original UK edition?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s first published novel was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Bloomsbury published the book in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It introduced Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the series’ central conflict with Lord Voldemort. The story follows Harry during his first year at Hogwarts and his discovery that he is famous in the wizarding world.

The title differs between British and American editions. Scholastic published the same book in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, changing “Philosopher” to “Sorcerer” for marketing reasons. The plot is substantially the same, although some wording was also adjusted for American readers.

The book began one of the most commercially successful literary series in history. Its success led to six more novels, eight feature films, translations into numerous languages, and a major expansion of Rowling’s fictional wizarding world.
