Which Hogwarts house does J.K. Rowling place Harry Potter in?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling places Harry Potter in Gryffindor at Hogwarts.

The Sorting Hat assigns Harry to Gryffindor during the welcoming feast in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. He joins Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, who also become members of the house and his closest friends.

Gryffindor is associated with courage, nerve, and chivalry. Its emblem is a lion, and its house colours are scarlet and gold. The house was founded by Godric Gryffindor, one of the four medieval founders of Hogwarts.

Harry’s sorting is notable because the Hat considers placing him in Slytherin. Harry’s expressed preference helps influence the result, though the books also suggest that his choices and character are more important than any single house label. Draco Malfoy, Harry’s rival, is sorted into Slytherin.
