Which Harry Potter house does J.K. Rowling’s character Harry belong to?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling’s character Harry Potter belongs to Gryffindor house.

Harry is sorted into Gryffindor during his first year at Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The house is associated with courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry, and its emblematic animal is the lion.

Harry’s closest friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, are also Gryffindors. The trio’s house affiliation places them in frequent competition with Slytherin, especially through Quidditch matches, house points, and the rivalry between Harry and Draco Malfoy.

The Sorting Hat considers Harry’s choices and qualities before placing him in Gryffindor. Although the hat also recognizes traits that could have suited Slytherin, Harry strongly rejects that possibility. Gryffindor is therefore his official Hogwarts house throughout the series.
