Representing Czechoslovakia, Čáslavská first won the all-around at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Four years later in Mexico City, she successfully defended the title, becoming only the second woman to win Olympic all-around gold at consecutive Games after Larisa Latynina. As of the 2024 Olympics, they remain the only two female gymnasts to accomplish that feat.

Čáslavská was more than an all-around champion. At the 1964 Games she also won gold on vault and balance beam. In 1968 she added gold medals on vault, uneven bars and floor exercise, while taking silver in the team event and balance beam.

Her 1968 triumph carried political significance. After opposing the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, she trained in hiding and later quietly turned her head during the Soviet anthem at medal ceremonies. That gesture became one of the most memorable moments in Olympic history.
