Which group did Beyoncé join before launching her solo recording career?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé joined Destiny’s Child before launching her solo recording career.

Destiny’s Child developed from a Houston singing group originally called Girl’s Tyme. The lineup changed several times before Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams became the best-known trio. The group achieved major success with albums such as The Writing’s on the Wall and Survivor, along with singles including “Say My Name,” “Survivor,” and “Bootylicious.”

Beyoncé was the group’s most prominent lead vocalist, but Destiny’s Child was a collaborative act rather than a solo project. The group’s commercial success gave her extensive experience in recording, choreography, touring, and music-video production before her first solo album appeared in 2003.

Destiny’s Child announced a temporary hiatus in 2001 and later reunited for additional work before disbanding in 2006. Beyoncé’s solo career therefore overlapped historically with the group’s final years, but her first solo studio album, Dangerously in Love, came after she had already become established through the trio.
