Which group did Beyoncé join as a child before it became Destiny’s Child?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé joined the child singing group Girl’s Tyme before it became Destiny’s Child.

Girl’s Tyme formed in Houston, Texas, in the early 1990s and included Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland. The group competed on the television talent program Star Search in 1993, although it did not win. Its early performances helped develop the vocal and stage skills that later shaped Destiny’s Child.

After management and lineup changes, the group was renamed Destiny’s Child. The best-known trio lineup consisted of Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams. Destiny’s Child became one of the most successful female groups in popular music, with hits such as “Say My Name,” “Survivor,” and “Bootylicious.”

Some accounts incorrectly describe Destiny’s Child as Beyoncé’s first musical group. Girl’s Tyme came earlier, and the name is often written with an apostrophe as “Girl’s Tyme.” The group’s Star Search appearance predates Destiny’s Child’s 1997 recording debut.
