Which Greek stadium hosted gymnastics at the 1896 Summer Olympics?
Answer
Panathinaiko Stadium
Answer
Panathinaiko Stadium
Panathinaiko Stadium hosted gymnastics at the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens.
The stadium, also known as the Panathenaic Stadium or Kallimarmaro, is built almost entirely of marble and stands on the site of an ancient Athenian stadium. For the first modern Olympics, its infield served as the competition area for gymnastics, while the venue also hosted athletics, weightlifting and wrestling.
The 1896 gymnastics programme consisted of eight events, all for men, contested from 9 to 11 April. The competitions included apparatus events such as rings, horizontal bar, parallel bars and pommel horse, as well as team events and rope climbing.
A frequent source of confusion is the stadium’s name: “Panathinaiko” and “Panathenaic” are English renderings of the same venue. The nearby Zappeion hosted fencing, while swimming took place in the Bay of Zea, so those locations were not gymnastics venues.
