Which Greek peninsula contains Mount Pelion and the ancient city of Iolcos near modern Volos?
Answer
Pelion Peninsula
Answer
Pelion Peninsula
The Pelion Peninsula is the Greek peninsula containing Mount Pelion and the ancient city of Iolcos near modern Volos.
It projects into the Aegean Sea from Thessaly and is formed by the forested Mount Pelion massif. The peninsula’s eastern coast is steep and exposed to the Aegean, while its western side faces the Pagasetic Gulf. Villages such as Makrinitsa, Zagora and Tsagarada are known for traditional stone architecture, wooded slopes and mountain paths.
In Greek mythology, Mount Pelion was associated with the centaurs and with the education of heroes such as Achilles. Iolcos, identified with the area around modern Volos, was the legendary home of Jason before the voyage of the Argonauts. Pelion should not be confused with Chalkidiki, another Greek peninsula group farther north in Macedonia.
