Which god fights Surtr and dies at Ragnarok?

The story behind the answer

Freyr fights Surtr and dies at Ragnarök.

Freyr is a major Vanir god associated with fertility, prosperity, sunshine, peace, and favorable harvests. He is the twin brother of Freyja and the son of Njörðr. Although he belongs to the Vanir, he lives among the Æsir after the two divine groups make peace.

At Ragnarök, Surtr leads the forces of Muspell against the gods. Freyr confronts the fire giant but lacks his famous self-fighting sword. He had previously given the weapon to his servant Skírnir as part of the bargain connected with winning the giantess Gerðr. Freyr therefore fights at a severe disadvantage and is killed by Surtr.

A common mix-up is confusing Freyr’s opponent with another of Ragnarök’s famous battles. Odin dies fighting Fenrir, Thor kills Jörmungandr before succumbing to its venom, and Heimdall and Loki kill each other. Freyr’s death is distinctive because it is linked to the loss of his own magical sword.
