Which god fights the hound Garmr at Ragnarok?

The story behind the answer

The god Týr fights the hound Garmr at Ragnarök, and the two kill each other.

The episode is described in the Prose Edda’s Gylfaginning. Garmr is released from his bonds near Gnipahellir, a cave associated with the underworld, as the forces of Ragnarök gather. The text calls him a formidable dog or hound and makes his final combat a mutual death match with Týr.

Týr is best known for courage, law, and the binding of Fenrir. He loses a hand when he places it in the wolf’s mouth as a pledge while the gods test the binding. This earlier encounter helps explain why Týr is often linked with dangerous wolves and hounds.

Garmr is sometimes confused with Fenrir because both are monstrous canine figures connected with Ragnarök. The surviving texts do not present them straightforwardly as the same character, so the quiz’s answer is Týr, not Heimdall, Thor, or Odin.
