What hall for the righteous survives Ragnarok?

The story behind the answer

What hall for the righteous survives Ragnarok? Gimle is the radiant hall or place where the righteous are said to live after Ragnarok.

Gimle appears in Völuspá and in Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda. It is described as exceptionally beautiful, with a roof brighter than the sun and protection from the fires that consume the world during Ragnarok. Snorri places it in Víðbláinn, a heavenly region associated with the highest realm.

The sources vary slightly in how they frame Gimle: it can be read as the name of the hall, the mountain on which the hall stands, or a blessed post-Ragnarok dwelling. The name is often explained as meaning a place protected from fire, though “gem-roof” has also been proposed. Gimle should not be confused with Valhalla, Odin’s warrior hall before the final battle, or Fólkvangr, Freyja’s field. Nastrond, by contrast, is a punitive underworld associated with the wicked.
