Which goalkeeper made a record 310 consecutive Premier League appearances?
Answer
Brad Friedel
Answer
Brad Friedel
Brad Friedel made a record 310 consecutive Premier League appearances as a goalkeeper.
Friedel’s uninterrupted run lasted from 14 August 2004 until 7 October 2012. It crossed three clubs: Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur. The sequence began during his Blackburn career and continued through his transfer to Aston Villa in 2008 and his move to Tottenham in 2011.
The streak ended when Tottenham left Friedel out of the starting lineup against Aston Villa, with Hugo Lloris taking his place. Friedel later returned to the team, but the consecutive-appearance record had already been set. His achievement is particularly striking for a goalkeeper, whose selection can be affected by injury, suspension, rotation or a manager’s preference.
The number refers to consecutive Premier League matches in which Friedel appeared, not consecutive matches for one club and not every competitive fixture in his career. Friedel also represented the United States at three World Cups and became, for a time, the oldest player to appear in a Premier League match. Those are related longevity achievements, but 310 consecutive league appearances is the specific record asked here.
