Which German educator is often called the father of gymnastics?

The story behind the answer

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn is the German educator often called the father of gymnastics.

Born in 1778, Jahn helped establish the German Turner movement, or Turnen, in the early nineteenth century. In 1811 he opened a public outdoor gymnastics ground at Hasenheide near Berlin, where students practiced exercises using equipment such as parallel bars and the horizontal bar. His admirers called him “Turnvater Jahn,” meaning “Father Jahn” or “Father of Gymnastics.”

Jahn’s work was connected to German nationalism after the Napoleonic occupation. He viewed physical training as a way to build discipline, health and civic strength, and his movement helped inspire the growth of organized gymnastics clubs. His 1816 book, Die Deutsche Turnkunst, further shaped the tradition.

Johann GutsMuths is a frequent source of confusion. GutsMuths developed an influential educational system of physical exercise and is sometimes called the grandfather of gymnastics. Jahn, however, is the standard answer to the “father of gymnastics” wording.
