The Unforgiven
Answer
The Unforgiven
“The Unforgiven” is the fourth track on Metallica’s 1991 album, The Black Album.
The song follows “Enter Sandman,” “Sad but True,” and “Holier Than Thou” in the album’s sequence. It was also released as the record’s second single, on October 28, 1991. The song’s central theme is an individual struggling against people or systems that attempt to control or subjugate him.
James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Lars Ulrich received composer credit, while Hetfield wrote the lyrics. The recording features the standard Black Album lineup of Hetfield, Ulrich, Hammett, and bassist Jason Newsted, with an uncredited keyboard part by a musician identified as “Scott.”
“The Unforgiven” later became the first entry in a trilogy. “The Unforgiven II” appeared on Reload in 1997, and “The Unforgiven III” appeared on Death Magnetic in 2008.
