Which former U.S. treasurer became chairwoman of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission in 2022?

The story behind the answer

Former U.S. treasurer Rosie Rios became chairwoman of the United States Semiquincentennial Commission in 2022.

Rios served as the 43rd Treasurer of the United States from 2009 to 2016 during Barack Obama’s presidency. The treasurer’s office oversees the signatures and seals associated with U.S. currency, making Rios especially familiar with national financial institutions and public symbols.

She joined the Semiquincentennial Commission on January 11, 2018. In July 2022, President Joe Biden appointed her chairwoman, succeeding Daniel DiLella. The commission is the bipartisan congressional body responsible for planning the national commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Rios is also known by her full name, Rosa Gumataotao Rios; “Rosie Rios” is the name commonly used in public biographies and official coverage. She should not be confused with Anna Escobedo Cabral or Jovita Carranza, both of whom also served as U.S. treasurer but held the office at different times.
