Herman J. Schwarzmann served as chief architect of Philadelphia’s 1876 Centennial Exposition, an earlier anniversary celebration before America250.
Schwarzmann worked for Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park Commission and was responsible for the design of the exposition’s grounds. His work combined landscape planning with the design of major exhibition buildings, giving the fair a coherent visual setting.
Among the structures associated with him were Memorial Hall and Horticultural Hall. Memorial Hall was designed in a Beaux-Arts style and became the exposition’s principal art gallery. Schwarzmann also designed smaller buildings and coordinated the landscaping around the fairgrounds.
His name is sometimes confused with that of later Philadelphia architects, especially Frank Furness, whose work is strongly associated with the city. Schwarzmann’s significance here is specifically his leadership in designing the 1876 Centennial Exposition.
