The former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist who replaced Lindsey Buckingham in Fleetwood Mac was Mike Campbell. Fleetwood Mac announced Campbell’s addition in 2018 after Buckingham departed from the band.
Campbell was a major creative force in Tom Petty’s music. He co-wrote many Heartbreakers songs, including “Refugee,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream” and “You Got Lucky,” and was widely respected for his economical, song-focused guitar work. His long partnership with Petty made him a natural fit for Fleetwood Mac’s guitar-heavy repertoire.
Campbell did not join alone. Neil Finn, the singer and guitarist associated with Split Enz and Crowded House, joined at the same time. The pair appeared with Fleetwood Mac on the 2018 An Evening with Fleetwood Mac tour. The wording can cause confusion because Campbell and Finn jointly filled the roles associated with Buckingham, but Campbell is the only one of the two who was a former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers guitarist.
