Carla Bruni became First Lady of France after marrying President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008.
Bruni was born in Turin, Italy, and built an international modeling career during the late 1980s and 1990s. She worked for major fashion houses and became one of the best-known models of the supermodel era before shifting her public focus toward music and songwriting.
She married Sarkozy at the Élysée Palace on 2 February 2008, while he was serving as president of France. Bruni subsequently combined public duties with her continuing career as a recording artist.
Bruni is sometimes described simply as a singer because of her later career, but her international fame initially came from modeling. She is also often identified as Italian-born, although she became a French citizen in 2008.
