“Dreams” is the Fleetwood Mac song that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Written and sung by Stevie Nicks, it was released in 1977 as the second U.S. single from the band’s landmark album Rumours.
The song reached the summit on June 18, 1977, and stayed there for one week. Its restrained rhythm, spacious production, and reflective lyrics contrasted with the turbulent relationships among the band members during the Rumours sessions. Nicks reportedly wrote the song quickly in a recording-room setting, then developed the arrangement with the rest of the group.
“Dreams” was Fleetwood Mac’s only U.S. Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single. The other choices are major Fleetwood Mac songs, but they did not achieve that distinction: “Go Your Own Way” peaked at No. 10, while “The Chain” and “Landslide” became especially influential through later radio, live, and soundtrack appearances. The song also found a new generation of listeners after a 2020 viral skateboarding video revived interest in it.
