Rumours was Fleetwood Mac’s first album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart. Released in February 1977, it initially entered the British chart at number seven before rising to the top in January 1978.
The album marked a major turning point for Fleetwood Mac. It followed the success of the 1975 album Fleetwood Mac, which introduced the Buckingham-Nicks lineup but peaked at number 23 in the UK. Rumours took the band’s relationship-driven songwriting and polished pop-rock sound to a much larger audience.
Its success was not limited to Britain: Rumours also topped the charts in the United States, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. It later became one of the best-selling albums ever, with worldwide sales estimated at more than 40 million copies.
A common mix-up is confusing the album’s UK chart achievement with its US success. The 1975 Fleetwood Mac album was the band’s first US number-one album, but Rumours was the first to reach number one in the UK. It also won the 1978 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
