Which Fire Nation admiral kills the moon spirit at the Northern Water Tribe? Admiral Zhao kills the moon spirit.
During the Siege of the North, Zhao discovers that the Moon and Ocean spirits are living in the Spirit Oasis. He realizes that destroying the Moon Spirit would remove the Water Tribe’s ability to waterbend, because the moon is central to the balance that gives waterbending its power.
Zhao captures the Moon Spirit, causing the moon to turn red and plunging the world into darkness. Although he briefly releases the spirit after Aang and his allies confront him, Zhao kills it immediately afterward. His act disrupts the natural order and leaves the Northern Water Tribe’s waterbenders powerless.
Zhao is not allowed to escape the consequences. The Ocean Spirit pursues him, and Zhao refuses Zuko’s attempt to save him. He is dragged beneath the water and later revealed in The Legend of Korra to be trapped in the Spirit World. A common mix-up is Iroh: Iroh opposes Zhao’s plan and attacks him because of the danger to the spirits.
