Oppenheimer earned Christopher Nolan his first Academy Award for Best Director.
Nolan won the award at the 96th Academy Awards, held on March 10, 2024. Oppenheimer also won Best Picture, with Nolan among the film’s producers, as well as awards for Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., editing, cinematography, original score, and film editing-related categories.
Before this win, Nolan had received several directing nominations. He was nominated for Dunkirk at the 90th Academy Awards and for Oppenheimer at the 96th ceremony. His earlier films, including Inception and The Dark Knight, received major nominations but did not give him the directing prize.
The award is sometimes confused with Nolan’s first Oscar nomination, which came much earlier through his filmmaking career. Oppenheimer’s ceremony success made it one of the most decorated films in Nolan’s body of work.
