King Richard earned Beyoncé an Academy Award nomination for “Be Alive.”
The 2021 film King Richard follows Richard Williams as he guides the early careers of his daughters Venus and Serena Williams. Will Smith stars as Richard, while Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton play Venus and Serena.
Beyoncé co-wrote and performed “Be Alive” with songwriter Dixson. The song plays over the film’s end credits and was nominated for Best Original Song at the 94th Academy Awards in 2022. Billie Eilish and Finneas won that category for “No Time to Die.”
Beyoncé had earlier received an Oscar nomination for “Be Alive” as a songwriter and performer, not as an actress. Dreamgirls is a separate film in which she acted and sang, while The Lion King involved her voice performance as Nala in the 2019 remake.
