Which fictional newspaper does J.K. Rowling use as the main wizarding newspaper in Harry Potter?

The Daily Prophet is the main wizarding newspaper in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

The newspaper reports political developments, public events and stories about the magical community. Harry and his friends regularly encounter its coverage of Hogwarts, the Ministry of Magic and Lord Voldemort’s return. Its reporting becomes especially important when the paper follows the Ministry’s preferred version of events.

The Daily Prophet is fictional and should not be confused with The Quibbler, another wizarding publication edited by Xenophilius Lovegood. The Quibbler is known for unusual stories and initially provides a platform for Harry’s account of Voldemort’s return.

The newspaper’s name echoes the idea of a prophet delivering news, while “daily” signals its role as a regular publication. Rowling uses it to show how institutions can shape public opinion through selective reporting and pressure from authorities.
