Beyoncé voiced Nala in Disney’s 2019 film The Lion King.
The film is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s 1994 traditionally animated film. Directed by Jon Favreau, it retells the story of Simba, a young lion who must reclaim his place as king after the death of his father, Mufasa.
Nala is Simba’s childhood friend and later becomes his partner and queen. In the 2019 film, Beyoncé voices the adult Nala, while Shahadi Wright Joseph voices young Nala. Donald Glover voices adult Simba, and JD McCrary voices young Simba.
Beyoncé also contributed music to the project. She curated and executive-produced The Lion King: The Gift, an album inspired by the film, and performed “Spirit,” an original song associated with the movie. Nala is not the same character as Sarabi, Simba’s mother, or Kiara, who appears in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.
