Which Fast & Furious film became the franchise's first worldwide billion-dollar hit?

The story behind the answer

Furious 7 became the first Fast & Furious film to earn more than one billion dollars worldwide.

Released in 2015, Furious 7 was a major global success and finished its theatrical run with more than $1.5 billion in worldwide box-office receipts. It became one of the highest-grossing films ever released at that time.

The film's commercial performance was helped by the franchise's international popularity, its large ensemble cast, and the emotional attention surrounding Paul Walker's final completed appearance. Walker died during production in 2013, and the movie was completed with the help of visual effects and body doubles.

Fast Five had already expanded the series into a highly successful action-heist franchise, but it did not reach the billion-dollar milestone. Later entries, including The Fate of the Furious and F9, also surpassed it, but Furious 7 was first.
