Which fashion house introduced the New Look collection in 1947?

The story behind the answer

Christian Dior introduced the New Look collection in Paris in 1947.

The collection debuted in Dior’s first couture show and emphasized rounded shoulders, a narrow waist, and a full skirt. Carmel Snow, editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar, reportedly called the silhouette the “New Look,” a phrase that became its lasting name.

The style contrasted with the boxier, fabric-saving clothing common during the Second World War. Dior’s designs used substantial quantities of fabric, especially in full skirts, and presented an image of postwar femininity and luxury. The Bar jacket, with its fitted waist and rounded hips, became one of the collection’s best-known garments.

The New Look was influential but not universally welcomed. Some critics objected to its heavy use of fabric during continuing postwar shortages. Others viewed it as a return to restrictive dress conventions. Nevertheless, the 1947 collection established Dior as a major Paris couture house and strongly influenced women’s fashion in the following decade.
